It's a inconvenient truth that the most of the energy in the form of heat that the earth recieves comes from the sun.
Some scientists say that we are currently getting more sunspot activity which is associated with more heat coming from the sun.Plus the fact that all the other planets in our solar system are all heating up at the same time. Duh!
Whether the earth is heating, cooling or turning to jello, not the point to me. To think we can do one damn thing to alter or prevent an occurance whose magnitude we can't begin to comprehend displays nothing save massive human ego. Bottom line to me (and I know this isn't politically incorrect), who cares? If scientists told me tomorrow the sun would burn out in 10 years, well crap. Can I alter that? Can I stop it? I figure I got 10 years. Better enjoy 'em. Environmentalism is just that...an 'ism'. It's not an 'ology' as in climatology and regardless of Al Gore, there is no agreement among any group of climatologists on earth that indeed the earth is either heating or cooling. Just depends on which expert witness you hire.

I love the succinct style you so frequently employ--you cut right to the point. I am with you. We cannot do anything about the sun. Mars has melting ice caps like Earth; no humans even live on that planet. I bet Al Gore and his idiot followers would say that the Mars melting is also caused by our actions--you know, there is SO MUCH excess heat being emitted by us we are even affecting our neighboring planets. Like a comment I left on another hub, sorry to be so rude and blunt, but I HATE AL GORE!

Tobey, people like you and me don't really give a crap about those uninformed and gullible zealots. I bet if Ralph Deeds read this he would be quite displeased. Frankly, that is why I only do "hubbing" I once visited the forums for a few minutes, and WOW was it hostile in there. It may be closed-minded of me, but I truly don't care to hear from the fools who don't seem able to recognize the difference between fact and opinion.

Ha! I like that. I read yesterday in a NOAO release that 5 independent scientific study groups presenting their global weather projections for what they term 'the near future'. In it they forecast greater than average cooling for the next 20 to 25 years. Sorry Al.
Keep it going, either hell will freeze or the the sun will burn up the plant earth. Give it another 1000 yrs

I like especially this point: Green building standards that will further crush the industry? Going green in reality requires less money and a more frugal way of living. But hey, you can't stop business right? So the governments always ready to help citizens and not corporations had put so many requirements that you have to double the money spent. This way going green is like eating organic, if you don't do it by yourself it's a riches way of life. The fact that reducing pollution is the only way to go is secondary, 'til the next disaster.

I'm with Hoowantstono, bring it on. I'm really not concerned with what takes place 500 or 1000 years down the road. My kids will be fine and their kids and their kids. The rest of them can fend for themselves. They'll probably be in a galaxy far, far away by then.
Hpno, believe it or not I like the idea of building green. As a matter of fact I use wind and solar power at my house. Not for any cause, me and the boys just wanted to see if we could do it. Green is great, just don't legislate it or fine me if I'd rather not.

In any case, the heat capacity of carbon dioxide is considerably lower than that of air. In other words, CO2 heats up faster than air when subject to a given amount of energy. You can do an experiment at your desk with balloons a thermometer and a light bulb, you'll find that the balloon with CO2 heats up about 20% more than air. Now, combine that with the fact, also easy to calculate, that people burn enough stuff to increase the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere by about 1% per year, and have been doing so for over 60 years, and you have the essential facts of global warming/climate change. The tricky part has to do with the extent to which the ocean and forests can buffer the effect. The essential science, though, is obvious.
So, yeah, I also find the knee-jerk attribution of blaming stuff on global warming annoying but that's just people being irritating, hardly unique to climate change.
