Never Enough: America's Limitless Welfare State
Amazon Price: $11.22
List Price: $23.95

We are endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  Maybe it’s just a Southern, country-boy thing but it seems to me that for the past sixty years people have misread the Bill of Rights.  Notice, if you will, it says ‘the pursuit of happiness’, not ‘happiness’.  This may come as a shock but the mere fact that one might be an ‘American’ does not guarantee one’s right to happiness, only that one has the inalienable right to pursue happiness free of government prohibition.  For example, if becoming a doctor would make me extremely happy, I have every right to pursue that goal and the government may not prohibit my pursuit of that goal because I may be black, Irish, a woman or short.  We are guaranteed the pursuit, not the goal.  Somewhere along the line we have fogged over the massive difference between rights, wants, needs, desires and demands.

I dare say many, if not most, of the current generation cannot define the term inalienable as it applies to the rights bestowed on us as set forth in the Bill of Rights.  Inalienable rights: those rights accorded to man that are incapable of being alienated, surrendered or transferred.  When did we forgo our individual pursuit of happiness for government supplied happiness?  At what point did we as a nation determine that only the government could provide for our needs?  I’m quite sure you’ve heard the facts and the figures, on the news or in your local paper but just for a moment consider this; over 50% of the citizens of the United States of America depend on the federal government for their wellbeing.  Over 50%.  Food stamps, welfare payments, unemployment benefits, social security and a host of other social programs.  Before you conclude that I am anti-government intervention of any sort, I believe social programs administered by the government to be a vital necessity.  In this country, as in all others, there will always be a certain portion of the population incapable of caring for themselves.  It is our obligation as a nation to see to their needs however, we have extended and misrepresented compassion to the point of crippling society.

One of our local television stations recently conducted a ‘man on the street’ type poll to determine to what extent individuals understood the difference between ‘rights’ and ‘wants’.  The shocking results were presented in a one hour documentary highlighting the extent of the problem we’ve created.  The poll was made up of ten simple questions, each beginning with ‘Should the government….’  As a sample here are the five that shocked me the most.

Should the government provide individuals a means of livelihood?  57% Yes.  40% No.

Should the government provide free child care?  61% Yes.  32% No.

Should the government provide individuals a college education?  59% Yes.  37% No.

Should the government provide homes for its citizens?  48% Yes.  51% No.

Should the government assure life, liberty and happiness?  78% Yes.  20% No.

The most startling response of the five is the last.  Should the government assure, assure life, liberty and happiness?  Not the pursuit of happiness but happiness.  78% of those responding believe it is the government’s duty to assure happiness.  Without realizing we have abrogated personal responsibility in order to feed at the government table.  By our own hand we have planted and are harvesting a creeping for of socialism, the very socialism we rail against.

The ‘Tea Party’ movement, and I hate using that terminology, is nothing more than likeminded individuals espousing their belief that an ever intrusive government has overstepped its bounds and needs to be reined in.  Though I do not consider myself a member I do agree with the sentiment.  I do not need the government deciding what I eat.  I do not need the government to determine my ideal weight.  I do not need the government mandating what automobile I am allowed to drive.  I do not need the government determining which doctor I use or whether or not I purchase insurance.  Such is not the government’s task.  These are my responsibilities and as such, if I shirk my personal responsibility, I personally must pay the price.  Sadly, yet realistically, there are winners and losers in life.  There always have been.  There always will be regardless of governmental efforts to eliminate the highs and lows of earthly existence.

My father used to say that winning means nothing without having lost and losing means nothing without having something to lose.  Our President said recently “Part of the reason that our politics seems so tough right now and facts and science and argument do not seem to be winning the day all the time is because we're hard-wired not to always think clearly when we're scared. And the country is scared."  I disagree.  A majority of the citizens of this nation are not scared.  They have awakened.  They have awakened to the fact that their country is heading down a path they do not wish to travel and have decided to apply the brakes.  If we’re lucky it might not be too late.

Nicely done hub on the basic concepts of this country's foundation.

I do think polls are part of the problem because they are basically statistics, and statistics can be manipulated. The form of the question and its context start that process, and then the interpretation of the results end the process. The total process is subjective in my view. The cable new media uses polls to troll for the weakminded, again my opinion.

The poll that is in your hub

Should the government provide individuals a means of livelihood? 57% Yes. 40% No.

Should the government provide free child care? 61% Yes. 32% No.

Should the government provide individuals a college education? 59% Yes. 37% No.

Should the government provide homes for its citizens? 48% Yes. 51% No.

Should the government assure life, liberty and happiness? 78% Yes. 20% No.

This poll does make your point.

This poll also makes my point on how useless are the results.

However, your point is trump.

My point can win a hand, while your point can win the game.

Thanks

While free education and adequate health care is something the government should provide (just like many other advanced countries in the world), it is absurd to even think that personal happiness of the individual is part of government’s obligation.

The most important part of government obligation is to provide safety (against foreign enemies), to protect its citizens against domestic abuse and violence, to ensure equal opportunities for its people independent of race, creed, sex, age and the rest

Duck, exceptional comment. Thanks

Petra, while I agree with some of what you say, you also make my point of the misconception concerning American 'rights'. Healthcare and Education are not rights. They are benefits and benefits can be withdrawn thus they are not inalienable. On a side note: 'other advanced countries that have been providing free education and healthcare are going broke.

petra I loved your tone downed simple comment as other advanced countries have??? Do you not listen to news? Every country in the world who has imposed health care had nothing but terrible results! Sooooo you think a failing Obama admin can do it better with no blue print? I don't work harder than most to give it up to those not willing to sacrifice as I do! It is not fair and there should not be a FAIR in America! Too many opportunities for all!

We, the people, should expect that our government will insure our safety against foreign attack, which of course is not happening at the moment. Our borders are dangerous and unprotected and the federal government is behaving irresponsibly. My view is that less government is better government. Do your job and say out of our personal lives. Don't tell me what to eat, how to think, or what to do with the money that I earned. Don't screw around with my health care and do not tell me what doctors I can see or what procedures I can have. I don't want Britain's system to come to America. It is a poor second to what we have now. Does our system need correcting, absolutely, but it doesn't need to be destroyed. I hope the coming elections stop this march towards a complete government takeover of the private sector.

I believe that a country who does not care about the education of its youth can hardly call itself a civilized country. We all know that the education system is inadequate and does not produce graduates able to compete in the world market. You say that countries who have provided free educations are going broke. What about America who is going broke just the same without even making an effort to provide any of the needed services?

It seems easier to “import” brains that to educate our own children, but in the long run we will end up with a bunch of “idiots” unable to tell right from wrong. Is that what America wants and needs? Doesn’t that play right in the hands of the ones who want to control us and can’t wait for us to fail?

That brings me to health care; “mente sana in corpores sano” has its merits and we as a nation can’t and should not ignore that. If we want to be a strong and prosperous nation we have to make investments in our future and by that I do not mean to go to war and convince others that we know what’s best for them

Tobey,

This is a great hub. Yesterday, I was explaining to some kids in class that the constitution does NOT list healthcare as a right, and the previous law disallowed ANY emergency room from refusing treatment based on ability to pay; the kids were unaware of that fact!! From the results of the interview that you reported here, it seems like there should be a bunch of folks moving to Greece or France because they have governments more in line with the socialistic tendencies shown by the answers the folks gave. Of course, it also helps explain why the dems get their power....promise ANYTHING and who cares who you screw over to deliver!

Great comments folks. I love it.

Petra, you've used the magic word that's is supposed to spur us all into action 'CARE'. Caring and doing the wrong thing can do more damage than good. Goes back to that old saying 'If you give a man a fish he can eat for a day. Teach him to fish and he can eat for life'. We have created an entire generation incapable of taking care of themselves because we 'cared' about them. Forcing someone to take responsibility for their own life doesn't mean you don't care. I think it means you care more.

How can a country that allows abortion for convenience call itself civilized? Because it can, I guess. The first right mentioned in the Constitution is utterly ignored in liberal America.

Tobey,

Very nice hub, well presented and absolutely true. There is however one point where the government is entirely at fault and responsibility for the correction lies at the Federal Congressional and Administrative doorsteps.

This point is the determined and purposeful interruption of the “pursuit of happiness” for millions of Americans who now find themselves, by not fault of their own, facing forced unemployment and foreclosure.

A situation created as a direct result of the present Governmental policy goals represented in both newly passed and proposed legislation containing both increased regulation and taxation as well as considerable uncertainty that have not only stifled, but crippled American businesses.
